British Trees, native & introduced

Hurray, we now have our  British Tree Gallery online with about 130 trees!
All pages have pictures of the tree and details, such as leaves and flowers. Some pages still only have minimal info, others are much more extensive. We will be working whenever time allows to extend it until it is the best online guide to British Trees. We also hope to add more trees and shrubs in the future. (Non-frame users please note that list is also at bottom of this page)
In-depth Tree Portraits: Of course we have already fourteen in-depth portraits of British trees available here and hope to add to this as well. Please visit again if your favourite tree is not yet in the scroll panel on the left! The latest one is Apple.

Wills' cigarette card - WhitebeamThree crash-courses in getting to know the most common British trees!
Whilst looking for a particular book on Trees on Ebay, I discovered three series of cards, which our parents and grandparents may have collected to know their trees. They are:
"Flowering Trees and Shrubs" (Wills' cigarette cards 1924)
"Trees of the Countryside" (Typhoo tea cards 1937)
British Trees & their uses (Ogden cigarette cards 1927).
I couldn't resist buying the three sets for the website and hope that the magnified pictures of these cards make an interesting addition.
This and other curiosa may be found in our Special Branch section.

Traditional knowledge: We also offer over 60 entries of Herbal Trees from the most famous British Herbal ever: "A Modern Herbal" by Mrs. M. Grieve, edited by Mrs. H. Leyel, published in 1931. Browsing through these entries, will give you a sense of why this herbal has remained so popular!

Mystery Tree revealed
Always keen to inform you about what is happening in our environment, we have included a species now found in wide variety of habitats in Britain, which you won't find in the most authoritative of field guides and up-to date botanical collections! Yet, you can read about it here!.

Get involved with enhancing this web resource by sending in photographs of trees, bark, details of branches, leaves, flowers, seed and fruit in all seasons (Good use of all these new digital cameras!).
We would like to make an archive for this website with botanical details of leaves, flowers, fruits, bark, winter and summer branches and typical examples of Trees, able to grow in Britain, in all seasons. Send us your photos or request a list of the trees:
All photos published will of course be properly accredited.
