Family:
Fagaceae (Beech family)

Synonym:
Common Beech, European Beech.

Native British Tree.

Propagation:
Beech nuts will germinate easily, as long as they have been stored in a cool place.
Sotwood cutting and layering on a woody stem are useful alternative methods, since the tree does not set seed every year and quite often most of the seed shells will be empty.

Note from Anna (webmother) to  page visitors:
Many of the pages in the Tree gallery, including this one, are only still bare bones. I hope to extend them as soon as I have time to write up and collate various sources and notes (It's a busy life, but I will get round to it eventually).  Please contact me if you have any information or material you like to contribute to this web resource.

Traditional  knowledge: The-Tree also offers a page where you can read the entry for Beech from "A Modern Herbal" (Mrs. M. Grieve, ed. Mrs. C.F.Leyel) published in 1931. Obviously things have moved on since then, yet this book is still often unsurpassed in its scope and depth of traditional knowledge. The page pops up in a new window. Close it to return to the Tree Gallery.
