Flowers: July - September.

An orchid with 3 - 6 pairs of leaves growing in alternating ranks. Height up to 45 cm. The leaves become more narrow the higher up the stem they are. The spike has 15 - 35 pale green hanging flowers, which are not open all the way. The petals are sometimes tinged with violet.

Found locally in open woodland and scrub on dry calcareous soils, also in coastal sand dunes in Wales and England, especially the south.
