Beech Roots

On a road somewhere near Abergavenny, going up a steep hill towards the Big Pit Mining Museum, we spotted a group of marvelous beeches. Shirley took some magnificent photos, which I have  brutally compressed to make them suitable for putting on the web.
Even so, they are still very worth looking at. Beeches have widespread shallow roots,  which is splendidly visible on the photo above.
This is a younger tree with some of its roots exposed.
Isn't it amazing to think, that even when we cannot see it there are all these roots hidden below in the earth!
