If you are interested in trees, as well as a holiday in the sun, you may want to consider a visit to central Portugal, where you can experience some great examples of agro-forestry. Many of the small traditional hill farms there are a treasure of every kind of fruit- and other sorts of useful (for human beings) trees you can imagine. The landscapes and the views are magnificent, you can still find local peasants selling their homegrown produce at local markets and when it's sweltering hot there are clean and magnificently scenic rivers to swim in. Quinta do Boico is an organic small holding aiming at self-sufficiency and offering eco-camping and a caravan on the farm to make ends meet. It is situated in a secluded terraced valley off of the picturesque Rio Mondego river valley. The farm is run by a British family who have gone to Portugal to bring many of their ideals, including permaculture, into practice. They are very friendly, interesting folk, who'll be able to offer you a relatively economic holiday on their land, which will give you experiences which big money often fails to buy. I went there myself last year and was mightily impressed. Not just with the trees and the amazing system of irrigation (including tree-lined pools of spring water) but also with the immense variety of wild flowers.
