the old Wills' Cigarette Card set "Flowering
Trees and Shrubs" from 1924, the Typhoo "Trees of the
Countryside" set, is a great way to learn
the name and a couple of other details about our most common British trees.
I've
enlarged and enhanced all 25 cards in the set so you can enjoy the excellent
detail. Each magnified card has been given its own page for easy downloading
on a modem.
The pictures on the right and the left here give you an idea of the actual
size of the cards, which was 1½" x
4”. All the backs of the cards have the same Fountain Pen
advertisement. The picture below is an example of the magnified detail
you'll be able to find in these pages. The
series was produced by the Typhoo Tea
company of
Birmingham,
England in 1937 and was avidly collected by our parents and grandparents,
who of course did not have the easy access to natural history we have today
through books and films.
Some of the scientific names of the trees and their classifications
have changed since that time, but links have been given to the same tree in
our British Tree Gallery for those of you who are interested to
learn more. You can either access the pages via the Index below or you can
simple follow the green triangular arrows (at the top and bottom of the
page) to the next page.
